Georgia Bulldogs' unique circumstance demands change in CFP format

Though the 12-team format of the CFP is still very new, Georgia's situation is exactly why some things need to change.

The SEC Championship game is a big deal in the south. Ever since the game became an official contest in 1992, the game has become a major stage in the college football world. Kirby Smart even said once that the game "has been as rare to win in some cases as a national championship.”

So, in what world would any SEC team have more value in not playing for that title? Well, look at the Georgia Bulldogs this season because the Dawgs are in a unique circumstance that it might be more beneficial for them to miss the game than not.

Georgia's 2025 season is why the CFP format must change

Georgia, as of now, is a very impressive 10-1 on the season with a 7-1 conference record. Though that conference record is extremely impressive, the Dawgs still need help to get to Atlanta for the SEC Championship. They would need either Alabama or Texas A&M to lose their game this weekend to get in. However, with the way the College Football Playoff format is now, they might benefit more in the long run by not playing in this game.

If Georgia misses the SEC Championship while still beating Georgia Tech, they will be 11-1 on the season. With the top four seeds now being the four highest ranked programs, Georgia would more than likely get a first round bye with that record. However, let's assume Georgia sneaks into the SEC Championship and loses. Now where would the committee rank Georgia? One would certainly not think that they would still get a first round bye with an 11-2 record compared to an 11-1 record.

Because of this CFP format, it is almost like these conference championships have lost their value. Under no college football landscape should a team prefer to not play for a championship of any kind. The committee has said before that they value teams that make the conference championship, but how? Regardless of how anyone looks at it, Georgia could be hurt from the chance of losing the SEC title.

Hopefully Georgia's circumstance this season will bring about some new changes in the format. Nothing drastic, but enough that still puts value in all conference championships.
