After dismantling Oklahoma 41-13 Georgia made a strong case for why they should be the No. 1 team in the country instead of Texas. The Week 4 AP Poll however decided against that as they kept Texas at No. 1 and even gave them a couple more first place votes than they originally had.
Georgia however gained a couple first place votes as well, but they actually moved closer to taking the No. 1 ranking from Texas in this week's AP Poll.
AP Poll voters are starting to see the bigger picture
Texas and Georgia were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 last week with the Longhorns having a 1,707 to 1,580 point advantage over UGA which comes out to 126 points. Points are awarded based on the ranking each voter gives each team. If a team is voted No. 1 in an individual voter's poll they get 25 points and the No. 2 team gets 24 points and the amounts decrease all the way down to teams ranked No. 25 getting one point.
In this week's AP Poll Texas earned 1,737 points while Georgia earned 1,646 points. This is a 91 point advantage for Texas which means Georgia gained a little ground on them this week.
Texas went from 58 first place votes to 62 this week while Georgia went from three first place votes to six. The Longhorns have a big advantage in this category, but overall Georgia gained substantial ground on Texas in this week's AP Poll.
Georgia's case to be No. 1 instead of Texas
Texas has two ranked wins compared to Georgia's zero and for the AP voters that's enough to make Texas their No. 1 team, but it isn't that simple.
Georgia is 4-0 and have dominated all four teams they've played. They won their first game of the season by 60 and their second game by 50 before back-to-back SEC wins by 28 points. This isn't just winning games, it's leaving no doubt that Georgia is the better team by a wide margin. Texas can't say the same.
Their first marquee win came against previous No. 1 Ohio State. They trailed the Buckeyes by 20 points entering the fourth quarter before storming all the way back to win by one point. While they deserve credit for not giving up it is a bit lucky to come all the way back from a 20 point deficit in the fourth quarter. Winning by one also isn't a convincing win like Georgia's wins have been.
Texas also beat previous No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday by three points. The Vols however haven't beaten anyone with a pulse yet this season so what looks like a marquee victory right now might end up looking completely different a month from now.
Both Texas and Georgia have good cases for why they deserve to be the No. 1 team in the country right now. The good news is that both teams have more opportunities to prove why they should be No. 1, but if they both keep winning they would eventually meet in the SEC Championship game as two 12-0 teams where they can decide on the field who should be No. 1.
