At one point in time, the Georgia Bulldogs were in serious contention for five-star running back Justice Haynes. Eventually, the Georgia native decided to take his talents to Tuscaloosa to play for Nick Saban and Alabama. Since then, Haynes has transferred to Michigan and as of today is back on the market.
With an already loaded backfield, Georgia fans likely feel content with their running game. However, it could be one of the best wins ever if Kirby Smart pulls off this wild move.
Justice Haynes could create three-headed monster
In 2017, Georgia arguably had the greatest backfield in college football history. That season, they had Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, and D'Andre Swift all split carries. Not only that, Chubb and Michel both finished with over 1,000 rushing yards and Swift still had over 600.
Smart knows how to run a system that has many talented running backs. The very next season, Swift and Elijah Holyfield both had 1,000 yards rushing. Now, imagine what Smart could do with three talented backs and a quarterback who just led the team in touchdown runs?
Haynes has only played in systems in college where he is expected to split carries, so it is not like this would be anything new for him. Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens could be the perfect complement to his game. With the receiving core getting wiped out by the NFL Draft, this could allow Gunner Stockton to feel even more comfortable moving the ball downfield with the backs versus having to do it all himself.
Along with Smart, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo also knows how to run a multiple-back system. Bobo coached names such as Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley, those who also had to split carries and found major success doing so. This would play right into the old school scheme Georgia used to be one of the best programs at doing. RBU could be back, and better than ever, if Smart is able to bring home the Georgia native.
