Who can cover Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase? Last night, it wasn't Kelee Ringo. In the preseason game between the Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night, Ringo got burned on four targets with four receptions and a breakaway touchdown when defending Chase. While the Eagles won the game, the defense was exposed by the precise tandem of Joe Burrow and Chase.
Ringo's status as a Georgia fan favorite is forever cemented with his fourth quarter interception to seal the 2022 national championship win against Alabama. But his past glory won't do him any good in the NFL if he doesn't improve his game. The disappointing play against the Bengals only underscores what Ringo recognized in training camp.
"Coming into the league and seeing that talent, of course, can definitely help you to get places where you want to go. But taking that next step of focusing on your technique [is key]."
Ringo has work to do to earn starting spot
Ringo’s technique has to rise to the level of his competition, because Adoree' Jackson is battling to win that cornerback spot too. So, while Chase is an elite receiver and tough to cover by anyone, Ringo got a good dose of reality Thursday night. But Georgia fans should count on Ringo to double down in the film room and see how to make better angles and refine his tackling skills on the practice field.
The Eagles have two preseason games remaining, which are outstanding opportunities for Ringo to show he can learn from his mistakes and turn in high-quality defensive showings against the Browns and the Jets. And, if he needs some support, encouragement and tough love, he may want to turn to the seven other Bulldogs on the Eagles' roster this season.
Just like any other rookie, Ringo has to prove his worth to the team and elevate his game to the Super Bowl quality the Eagles are expecting this season.
