The retirement of Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod threw an unexpected wrinkle into Georgia’s first game week of the 2026 season. Georgia has no choice but to push forward, and there are plenty of Bulldogs ready to step in and fill his role.
McLeod was expected to again be a key piece in the middle of the Bulldogs’ defensive line, but he decided to step away from the game at the start of fall camp. The exact reason for his departure still isn't 100 percent clear, but it does carry some implications for the rest of the team.

Georgia now needs other players on the interior defensive line to fill the shoes left by McLeod. One player who stands to gain a bigger role is junior Jordan Hall.
The big question with Hall is of course his health. A knee injury ended his 2025 season after the Florida game and held him out of Georgia’s entire spring camp. Before that, his 2024 season was cut short due to stress fractures in both of his legs.
It’ll take a lot for Hall to put together a mostly healthy year since he’s been so unlucky with injuries in the past. If he does, there’s no doubt that he’s one of the most talented players on Georgia’s defense.
Hall was a five-star prospect out of high school and ranked as the No. 12 overall prospect in the country as well as the No. 2 defensive lineman. He’s an explosive athlete who can shoot through gaps and finish plays with his long arms.
Hall was reportedly already getting reps with the starters before the news about McLeod was announced. His snaps are likely to only increase even if head coach Kirby Smart described Georgia’s interior line as a “by committee” group Monday.
“They're a very by committee group. They bust their butt every day in practice,” he said. “They compete. They go against a big physical offensive line… What we need is the twitch, the athleticism, the brains and some of those guys to make us a better pass rush.”
Sophomore Elijah Griffin could be in line for an increased role at the other defensive tackle spot. Another former five-star recruit, Griffin has drawn far more buzz so far in camp, and it’s easy to see why. He’s a younger player with more immediate pass-rush upside, and doesn’t have anywhere near the injury baggage Hall carries with him.
Hall should really not be counted out as a difference-maker on this team if fully healthy. Especially if Griffin emerges as a dominant force who demands double-teams. That would theoretically free Hall up for more one-on-one opportunities in the middle to create disruption.

As stout as Christen Miller and McLeod were last year as run-defending defensive tackles, they didn’t offer much as pass rushers. That could be where Hall and Griffin separate themselves, and add a new dimension to Georgia’s defense.
Interior pressure is the toughest kind to deal with, simply because it’s closest to the quarterback. If Georgia can get some of that from its defensive tackles, it would make the Bulldogs’ defense much tougher to deal with and give it something it lacked in 2025.
Here’s to hoping Hall can put together his first fully healthy college season in 2026.
