Georgia football has been anxiously awaiting to find out who their quarterfinal opponent will be in the College Football Playoff, and that question was finally answered.

10-seed Indiana traveled to 7-seed Notre Dame with the winner earning a trip to New Orleans to take on 2-seed Georgia. And this game, with all the hype of being the first game of the new 12-team CFP era, did not live up to the hype as Notre Dame dominated the Hoosiers 27-17.

This means that Notre Dame and Georgia will do battle at the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 with a spot in the CFP semifinals on the line.

Notre Dame has now won 11 straight games after losing to Northern Illinois week two this season. The Irish have one of the top defenses in the country and an offense that is capable of scoring points. However, their schedule was not very strong, and even a dominant win against an overrated Indiana team shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

But regardless, this game has all the makings of being a classic, just like the three previous matchups between these two programs.

Georgia vs. Notre Dame Series History

One would imagine that the series history between these two programs is rich considering both programs are the best of the best in college football history. However, these teams have only played three times in their history.

The first meeting came on Jan. 1 1981 when Georgia took down Notre Dame 17-10 which clinched the Bulldogs second National Championship in program history. The other two games were more recent, and they both resulted in wins for Georgia as well. The first game was in South Bend in 2017, which Georgia won 20-19. Then the Irish made a return trip to Athens, which Georgia won again 23-17.

So if the history between these two programs tells us anything, this game in about a week and a half will be extremely close. But history also tells us that Georgia will win as well, and hopefully that is the case so the Bulldogs can march on to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.
