Georgia football labeled the "big loser" of the day
Georgia football on paper had one of the best days of the season on Saturday. Not only did they knock off UMass 59-21 to move to 9-2 on the season, but three SEC teams (Ole Miss, Alabama and Texas A&M) all lost on Saturday which allowed Georgia to clinch their spot in the SEC Championship game in two weeks.
Usually this news is extremely exciting because one of Georgia's goals every season is to win an SEC Championship. However, this year apparently is a little different, because one college football expert coined Georgia as the "big loser of the day."
Georgia football making SEC Championship game may not be ideal
Let's first state the obvious being that if Georgia wins the SEC Championship game that none of these potential problems will actually exist that are listed below. A win in Atlanta will give Georgia a top four seed in the College Football Playoff and a first round bye automatically.
But there are two not so ideal things that could happen to Georgia if they lose.
Missing out on the CFP altogether
The formula for making the CFP in the new 12-team format is to lose no more than two games. In a conference as good as the SEC, if a team can get by without losing more than two games, than their spot in the 12-team playoff is essentially guaranteed.
But Kirby Smart and Georgia now have a chance to get their third loss in the SEC title game. Will the committee leave Georgia out if they lose this game? In most years teams that lose this extra game in their conference championship do not get passed by idle teams that don't play this extra week, but you never know with this committee will do.
Losing extra bye week
One of the positives about not playing in the SEC Championship game is that this week turns into a bye week before the CFP begins. So Georgia unfortunately will not get that bye week. If Georgia wins the SEC then they do get their extra bye week during the first round games of the CFP, but if Georgia loses in Atlanta and still makes the playoffs, then Georgia will not get the extra bye week that most other teams get.
Georgia would go from playing in the SEC Championship game the first weekend of December to then playing in the first round of the CFP in mid-December. Their opponent in the first round likely would not be playing this first weekend of December like Georgia is, so they would be more rested and healthier than Georgia.
But to avoid all of this from happening, Georgia just needs to win. The Bulldogs winning in Atlanta not only solves all of these problems, but wins them an SEC Championship. So hopefully this is what unfolds for Georgia in two weeks time.
