Georgia just knocked off No. 6 Alabama on the road 20-17. This marks the first victory for Kirby Smart over the Crimson Tide in his coaching career during the regular season, so that on its own is a good enough reason to celebrate like crazy.
The Bulldogs have another reason to celebrate though because Sunday afternoon when the updated AP Poll comes out they should be the new No. 1 team in the country thanks to the upset loss Texas suffered to Oklahoma on Saturday.
Texas couldn't do what Georgia did Oklahoma
Georgia played Oklahoma two weeks ago and absolutely annihilated the Sooners. They took a 28-0 lead into the halftime locker room and then coasted to a 41-13 victory.
Oklahoma had their bye week after their loss to Georgia and were staring down No. 1 Texas and potentially their third loss of the season this weekend, but Texas couldn't get it done and lost to the Sooners 27-24 after having a 10 point halftime lead.
Texas was supposed to be better than Georgia. After they beat Ohio State in week two they jumped Georgia in the AP Poll and had better odds to win the SEC and a national championship. It turns out Texas isn't better than Georgia and it might not even be close because they couldn't beat the team Georgia beat by 28 points.
Texas was the only team ranked in front of Georgia, so that clears the path for them to become the No. 1 team in the country after their monumental win at Alabama on Saturday.
Georgia's path to the SEC Championship game is quite simple
Georgia still has a lot of work to do before they clinch their spot in the SEC Championship game this season, but their win over Alabama makes them a heavy favorite to get there. The Bulldogs are the only undefeated team left in the SEC, and Alabama still looks like their biggest competition in the league. Georgia would have to lose twice before Alabama jumps them in the pecking order to get to Atlanta, and after how well UGA has played so far this season that is unlikely to happen.
Georgia's schedule is also fairly easy the rest of the way, all things considered. They still get to play Auburn and South Carolina which feel like easy wins along with a Florida team who has hit rock bottom the last two weeks. Ole Miss and Missouri are the two most difficult games left on their schedule, but Georgia may only have to beat one to get to Atlanta.
Alabama was the biggest test on Georgia's schedule, but they have a few more tests to pass still before they earn the right to play for a championship. The Bulldogs however have never been able to get over Alabama over the last few decades, but beating them in their stadium to mark their second win in a row against the Tide makes anything feel possible for this team.
Up next for Georgia is a home date against Auburn next week. After that Georgia will get their much needed bye week where they hopefully will be 7-0 and the No. 1 team in the country.
