Georgia football just took down Texas in overtime 22-19 in what immediately became one of the best games in SEC Championship game history.

This game will be remembered forever in Georgia football history as it is their third SEC Championship under head coach Kirby Smart. It will also be remembered because UGA is the first SEC team to earn a top four seed and first round bye in College Football Playoff history.

But beyond all of that, this game will go down in the history books because two things happened that have never occurred before in the 33 year history of the SEC Championship game.

First game win no first half touchdowns

The SEC has been known for decades for having some of the best defenses in all of college football. So whenever there is a low scoring game like we witnessed in the first half on Saturday, it really isn’t all that surprising.

But Saturday’s first half, which ended in a 6-3 lead for Texas, was the first game in SEC Championship history that didn’t have a touchdown scored in the first half.

Everyone knew that the two defenses in this game were extremely talented, but likely no one saw neither team scoring a touchdown in the first half coming. But that’s what happens when one offense struggles to move the ball and the other can’t finish off their drives.

First overtime game

Saturday’s game was also the first SEC Championship game that went to overtime. Just thinking about all the amazing games that have taken place in the SEC Championship game, which includes some from Georgia, it is wild that no game has ever gone to overtime before.

So while these two feats are pretty wild, they likely won’t be talked about for years and years to come. However, whenever these two stats do come up, it will be nice to know that they will always be mentioned along with Georgia winning this game.
