Georgia football is in the midst of a remarkable run. Their win against Tennessee on Saturday marked their 29th straight victory at home. The last time Georgia lost at home was against an unranked South Carolina team on Oct. 12, 2019, a game USC shockingly upset No. 3 Georgia 20-17. That terrible loss must have left a bad taste in the Bulldogs' mouths, because they have not lost at Sanford Stadium since.
One would assume that this win streak by Georgia has to be a record of some sort, or at least very close to one. Well, it turns out that Georgia is just three wins away from setting the SEC record for consecutive wins at home.
Georgia could set this record this season
As it stands today, Kirby Smart and Georgia are two wins away from tying the current record set by Alabama, who won 31 games at home in a row from 2015-2019. Georgia is also just one win behind Florida, who went on a 30-game run from 1994-1999.
So if Georgia beats UMass this Saturday, UGA will be in a tie for second place with the Gators. Then Georgia will be able to get in a tie for first place if they win their season finale against Georgia Tech.
So one would now think that Georgia will have to wait all offseason for their first home game next season to set this record. But that however may not be the case.
The Bulldogs are now once again in control of their destiny to make the College Football Playoff. And while it is still possible they earn a top four seed by winning the SEC, the most likely outcome is that Georgia comes up short and does not make it to Atlanta as one of the SEC's top two teams. If that's the case, Georgia will be seeded between 5-12 in the CFP, and teams 5-8 get to host their first round playoff game at their home stadium.
So with Georgia's resume (assuming they win their final two games) there is a great chance Georgia will be seeded 5-8, which means the Bulldogs can set the SEC home winning streak record this season. And what better time to do that then in Georgia's first ever home playoff game.
