There is no secret that Georgia fans live and breath football. Bulldog fans do love all of their other sports teams, but there is no denying that Georgia football is and always will be the biggest attraction in Athens. So every year when Georgia's season ends it is always very daunting looking at the calendar and realizing there are eight months before Georgia takes the field again.
That is except for the Spring Game which is always a highly anticipated event in Athens.
But college football is changing, and these changes that have taken place in football might force Georgia to reconsider if it is the best idea to have a Spring Game or not.
Why should Georgia ditch their Spring Game?
There's no denying that Georgia fans would be devastated if the Spring Game got cancelled, but from a competitive standpoint it might be the right choice.
The sport changed forever once the transfer portal and NIL became a part of college football. And one of the biggest things that has been amplified in the sport because of this is tampering. Tampering is when a program contacts a player from another school and attempts to convince them to transfer to their school even though they are not in the transfer portal. Tampering is illegal in college athletics, but the NCAA has not cracked down on it so pretty much everyone in the country does it.
It's impossible for Georgia to prevent other programs from tampering with their players, but there is a way Kirby Smart could combat this. And that is where cancelling the Spring Game comes into play.
If Georgia cancels their Spring Game that is one less opportunity for other programs to identify who to tamper with from UGA's team. It's also important to note that cancelling the Spring Game wouldn't hurt Georgia from a development standpoint because Smart could still simulate a Spring Game in a closed practice setting.
So while this announcement would not be ideal for the average Georgia fan, all things considered it may not be the worst thing in the world. There is no indication that Georgia is even thinking about cancelling the Spring Game right now, but other programs have outwardly discussed this idea so don't be surprised if Georgia is already thinking about doing it themselves behind the scenes.
