This year Georgia football doesn't have any drama to sit through during the release of the final College Football Playoff rankings as they beat Texas in the SEC Championship game to earn themselves a top four seed and first round bye in the 12-team bracket.
But there are still so many questions that need to be answered like which seed Georgia will earn and who their opponents could be. So let's see what the CFP committee decided to do.
Georgia rises to No. 2 in CFP rankings, earns 2-seed
After beating Texas and seeing No. 3 Penn State lose in the Big Ten Championship game, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs have risen to No. 2 in the committee’s updated CFP rankings. This puts Georgia only behind Oregon who remains No. 1. Somewhat surprisingly, Georgia jumped Notre Dame who was ranked in front of them this past week, but fell back to No. 5.
This ranking also earns Georgia the 2-seed in the 12-team CFP bracket, and they will take on the winner of the matchup between the 7-seed and 10-seed.
The biggest debate worth discussing is Alabama and SMU, who were fighting for the final at-large spot after Clemson beat SMU in the ACC Championship game on Saturday. This was really the only spot up for debate, as some said Alabama's three ranked wins were the reason they should be in over SMU who has zero to their name. But the Tide also have ugly losses to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma that many think should hold them back.
The committee has decided to side with SMU and keep Alabama out of the 12-team playoff.
Georgia’s potential quarterfinal opponent
Georgia will take on the winner of the matchup between 10-seed Indiana and 7-seed Notre Dame. This game will be played at Notre Dame, so the advantage goes to the Irish, but this game will likely be very competitive.
UGA will take on the winner in the Sugar Bowl which will be played on Jan. 1.
