Georgia football vs. Georgia Tech spread is shocking
Georgia football is getting set to take on UMass this weekend in what feels a little bit like a “bye week” because of how large the talent gap is between these teams. But another reason why this game feels different is because of what is looming next week.
Georgia’s annual matchup with in-state rival Georgia Tech is coming up next week, and it will be one of the biggest games of the season. Sure Georgia Tech isn’t on the same level of Georgia this season, but this game matters more than any other because a loss eliminates Georgia from the College Football Playoff picture.
So with this game being as important as it is, it’s natural to wonder what Vegas thinks of Georgia’s chances in this game. And the spread on FanDuel Sportsbook is a little surprising.
Georgia vs. Georgia Tech opening spread
According to FanDuel sportsbook, Georgia is a 20.5 point favorite over Georgia Tech. 20.5 points is a very large spread in any game featuring two power four teams, especially two rivals. So seeing this big of a spread on this game is shocking.
It also is really surprising because Georgia Tech is having a pretty decent season. As mentioned, they haven’t been as good as UGA this year, but the Yellow Jackets are 7-4 after besting NC State 30-29 on Thursday night. Georgia Tech also has a very impressive win this season when they handed Miami (FL) their only loss of the season 28-23.
So all of those data points makes it a little surprising to see Kirby Smart and Georgia favored by nearly three touchdowns. Georgia also hasn’t been the most consistent team this year either, so that causes some concerns for this game as well.
But the Bulldogs look like they’ve turned a corner after their win over Tennessee last weekend, so if Georgia continues to play that well then winning by this many points is possible.
However, don’t be surprised to see this line shrink a little bit, because Georgia Tech is a good enough team to push Georgia a little, even if UGA is at home in Sanford Stadium.
