Since college football moved to the 12-team College Football Playoff, it has given more teams hope that they can make a run in the postseason. It has also prevented team's seasons from being "over" for much longer in the season because they can afford to lose a couple games and still make the playoffs.
But Saturday gives Georgia a unique opportunity to end Alabama's season in the month of September which is almost unheard of when it comes to the Crimson Tide.
Georgia can end Alabama's season on Saturday
Throughout the last two decades the top dog in the college football world has been Alabama. This was the case during the old BCS system and throughout the 4-team College Football Playoff as well. Winning National Championships back then was much harder than it is today simply based on the fact that it was more difficult to qualify to earn the chance to play for a championship, but even back then Alabama was always a force to be reckoned with late in the season.
That however would not be the case this season if Georgia beats them on Saturday. If UGA beats Alabama that would mark the Crimson Tide's second loss of the season already. That would make life extremely difficult for them to make the CFP and SEC Championship game, so that loss would all but end their season in the month of September.
To be fair, Alabama could still make the CFP and SEC Championship game even if they do lose to Georgia. The Bulldogs accomplished both feats last season after losing to Alabama and having two regular season losses, so the same would be true for the Crimson Tide if they won out.
But sitting at 2-2 would be very scary for Alabama because no one would be confident in them being able to finish their season 8-0 after another loss. So Georgia has the opportunity to do something no one has ever done before in the modern era of college football by ending Alabama's season in the month of September.
