Georgia had a big opening on their defensive staff to fill after Will Muschamp left for Texas. And while it is nearly impossible to find someone as talented as Muschamp, the Bulldogs just made one of the best hires possible.

Maurice Smith is a former Georgia defensive back who just helped coach this past season in Athens. But he was not an official member of the coaching staff, so he sacrificed his time just to help the school and program he loves last year.
And now he has officially been rewarded after making that sacrifice by being hired onto Georgia's coaching staff as a defensive analyst.
Georgia adds former Bulldog DB to defensive coaching staff
Smith began his playing career at Alabama before transferring to Georgia for his final season of college football. This move was originally blocked by Alabama because back then the SEC didn't allow players to transfer to another SEC program, but public pressure forced Alabama and the SEC to allow it to happen.
During his one season in 2016 Smith made a huge impact on the field. He recorded 50 tackles, three passes deflections, two interceptions and two forced fumbles which was good enough to earn defensive MVP honors that season.
Smith unfortunately was not selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, but he still found his way onto a few rosters before retiring from playing football in 2023.
Smith now brings all of this epxerience to Georgia where he is getting his first true coaching gig. It's hard to know if coaches that are just analysts make a big impact on the team or not, but it's clear that Kirby Smart thinks he will. Smith just spent the last year unofficially helping the team out, so there is no other reason to hire him to a full time position if they didn't think he was very good at his job.
