On Friday the Florida Gators announced that Aaron Philo will start for them at quarterback over Tramell Jones. Jones is fresh off beating Texas on the road two weeks ago in his first start with the Gators, but even though Philo is dealing with an injury still they are still riding with him over Jones.
This announcement from Florida came at a strange time. So far this week Georgia was having to prepare to face both quarterbacks because they didn't know who was going to start for them. Now they know that Philo is getting the start so they can focus the rest of their prep on getting ready to play him.
Jones also may have been a better option against Georgia as well. He is a far more capable runner than Philo, and Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown just showed how much UGA's defense can struggle against a mobile quarterback when he ran for 115 yards in their upset win in Athens two weeks ago.
Florida for whatever reason thought Philo gives them a better chance to win, but that doesn't mean Georgia won't see Jones at some point during this game as well.
Florida would be silly to leave Tramell Jones on the bench all game
Since Philo is injured there's a chance he could get re-injured on Saturday which would force Jones into the game. That reason alone is enough for Georgia to have to get ready to face him in case that scenario occurs, but Florida would be silly to not play Jones at some point.
They don't even have to play him at quarterback though because he is a strong enough runner where they could hand the ball off to him. Florida could also sprinkle in some designed QB runs with him which could be effective because Georgia would have to respect his arm every time he's in the game.
Florida made it clear that Philo is their guy even if that is who Georgia would probably prefer to play. It however would be a huge mistake to not play Jones at some point even if Philo is showing no signs of being injured and is playing well.
Jones is the type of quarterback that Georgia historically struggles to defend. That is especially the case this season after what happened against Auburn two weeks ago. So even though it is nice that Florida announced Philo as their starter, Georgia should be prepared to see Jones step on the field at some point during this game.
