Another Sunday means yet another head coach being fired in the SEC. This time it is Auburn who decided it was time to move on Hugh Freeze.
Freeze didn't last long at Auburn as he was only in the middle of his third season with the Tigers. But a 15-19 record clearly isn't good enough at a program like Auburn, and the Tigers 10-3 loss at home against Kentucky on Saturday was the final straw.
Georgia was a big reason why Auburn fired head coach Hugh Freeze
Everyone knows that Georgia and Auburn are big rivals, so the success of a head coach at both programs depends on how they perform against each other. And in the case of Freeze at Auburn, he did not fair well against the Bulldogs.
Georgia faced Freeze three times during his tenure at Auburn, and the Bulldogs were able to emerge victorious in all three meetings. This includes a 27-20 victory in 2023, a 31-13 win last season and a 20-10 victory earlier this season. But it's this season's game that could have bought Freee more time as Auburn's head coach.
Auburn had every chance to beat Georgia this season. The Tigers had a 10-0 lead and were one yard away from making it 17-0. But a Jackson Arnold fumble on a QB sneak propelled Georgia to score 20 unanswered points en route to their comeback victory.
But many college football fans would argue that Georgia's comeback never should have happened. Even after the fumble Auburn still had complete control of the game, so if they would've just stuck to the way they were playing they probably still win that game. Freeze however wasn't able to keep Auburn focused after this fumble, and that ultimately cost them this game.
If Auburn would have won this game Freeze likely would still have a job. So while UGA isn't the only reason Freeze was fired, their victory this season played as big of a role in this decision as anything else.
