Georgia football entered their SEC Championship matchup against Alabama with a lot of doubters. While Georgia was favored in this game, the fact that they had only beat Alabama once in Kirby Smart’s tenure made a lot of football fans wonder if they could actually win this game.
Not only did Georgia win this game, but they dominated Alabama all night long en route to their 28-7 victory.
Georgia uses quick start to dominate Alabama
Georgia took complete control of this game essentially from the opening kickoff. The Bulldogs first two drives stalled, but their defense held strong and forced two punts as well. And on the second punt the Bulldogs were able to block the kick and setup their offense with a short field. After cashing that touchdown in Daylen Everette snagged an interception which led to another touchdown.
Georgia entered the halftime locker room up 14-0 and they never looked back throughout the second half. Alabama did score a touchdown to get some momentum back, but the Bulldogs scored a late touchdown of their own to extend their lead once again and win by 21 points.
Georgia earns coveted College Football Playoff seed
While winning the SEC for the second season in a row is obviously a big deal, the Bulldogs have also clinched the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff for the second year in a row as well. Georgia entered this weekend as the No. 3 seed, but the loser of the Big Ten Championship game will fall below UGA.
With the No. 2 seed comes a first round bye. This means Georgia won’t have to play another game until Dec. 31 or Jan. 1.
Georgia also will get to play one of the last at-large teams to make the playoff in their quarterfinal matchup. They will play the winner of the first round matchup between the No. 7 and No. 10 seed. It’s unclear who the No. 10 seed will be, but there’s a good chance Texas A&M will remain the No. 7 seed in the final bracket.
Georgia’s playoff path will become official on Sunday, so until then they get to celebrate beating Alabama and winning the SEC for the second season in a row.
