A Georgia Heisman Trophy is the one thing missing for the Bulldogs during Kirby Smart’s tenure. While the Heisman isn’t an award for head coaches to win it would look good on Smart’s resume to say that he had a player win it, and since he has won everything else possible in the sport this would be the last thing for him to help Georgia conquer in his career.
Gunner Stockton finished seventh in the Heisman voting this year and he is already being tabbed as someone to watch out for who could win the award next year. But there is another dark horse Bulldog who isn’t being talked about enough who can win the award as well.
Nate Frazier is the dark horse Heisman contender Georgia deserves
Stockton is the most likely Bulldog who win the Heisman next year, but running back Nate Frazier deserves some love as well. Frazier has had a dominant year this season to the point where reporters are beginning to recognize just how great he is. In fact, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach listed him as one player who could win the award next season.
The Heisman has turned into a quarterback’s award that hasn’t seen a running back take the trophy home since Mark Ingram in 2009. But Frazier is someone who could do the unthinkable and win it next season.
This year Frazier recorded 861 yards and six touchdowns on 158 carries. Those stats obviously are nowhere near good enough to win the Heisman, but he has shown he has the potential to compete for it if he is given more carries.
Unfortunately that is probably the thing that will hold him back because Georgia has a lot of depth at running back that will take carries away from him. But Frazier is finally getting some recognition as someone who could be one of the best players in all of college football next season and he absolutely deserves it.
