Many college football fans believe Georgia has been one of the best programs since the College Football Playoff began. It’s hard to argue against that since Georgia is one of the few schools who have won multiple National Championships in the history of the playoff, but there's a lot more that goes into it.
While winning two titles is extremely impressive, their playoff resume overall isn’t quite as good after taking a closer look, and that is especially the case over the last few years.
Georgia's CFP success has come to a screeching halt
It took Georgia four years to make the playoff for the first time. That however isn't all that bad considering it was just a four team playoff back then, but when Georgia finally made the playoff for the first time they made it all the way to the championship game. Unfortunately they lost to Alabama in overtime, but that was just a preview of what was to come.
After their first trip to the playoff it took another four years for them to get back to the playoff again, but this time they weren't going to fall short. The Bulldogs won their first National Championship under Kirby Smart against Alabama then followed it up with a 15-0 National Championship season. The Bulldogs were on the top of the world, until they weren't.
After Georgia's second national title they failed to make the playoff in 2023 after a 12-1 season. Then Georgia made it to the playoff in 2024 and 2025 only to fall short in the quarterfinals against Notre Dame and Ole Miss. So after a 5-1 start to their playoff resume, they have now gone three whole years without winning a single playoff game.
Georgia will look to change that this year, but their lack of playoff success after winning back-to-back titles is a bit concerning for a school who claims to be the No. 1 program in the country.
