Georgia’s close win vs Austin Peay is exactly what they needed

Georgia football needed to struggle against Austin Peay. Their 28-6 win was the perfect outcome Saturday night.

And no, that isn’t a hyperbole.

Georgia struggled on offense for much of this game while their defense dominated like they should. The Bulldogs have a dominant defense every year, so that was never in question, but there were a lot of people doubting Georgia’s offense this season. Those doubters however were turned into believers after Georgia’s dominant week one victory over Marshall.

So after a week of having everyone sing their praises, Georgia’s offense needed a poor showing like this to better prepare themselves for the season ahead.

Georgia needed a rough game against Austin Peay

No one is suggesting that Georgia was full of themselves after they beat Marshall last week, but it’s impossible to deny that they didn’t feel a little better about themselves. All offseason Georgia heard how they won’t be good enough to compete in the SEC, that Gunner Stockton isn’t talented enough to win at Georgia, and that UGA’s defense doesn’t have the players they need to replace all the talent they lost last season. So after going out and dominating Marshall, it probably felt good for UGA to confirm how wrong all of these college football “experts” were.

But the last thing Georgia needed right now was to think too highly of themselves, especially with a huge matchup next week at Tennessee. So this lackluster performance came at the perfect time because it will force Georgia to refocus and not think that anything will come easy this season.

It will be interesting to see if Georgia’s offense bounces back next week at Tennessee. However, if Georgia is going to win that game they are going to have to play a whole lot better than they did against Austin Peay.
