Georgia football learned their fate in the College Football Playoff earlier this week when the committee's first rankings came out. The Bulldogs were named the No. 5 team in the country in the committee's initial rankings, but with five weeks of football still to play that was bound to change.

Georgia's opponents in the playoff will also change as well throughout the rest of the season as teams continue to win and lose. And that is exactly what happened on Friday as Georgia's projected first round opponent lost which will shake up the Bulldogs entire path in the College Football Playoff bracket.

Georgia's College Football Playoff path sees drastic change

Georgia earning the No. 5 seed in the playoff means they would host a first round game against the No. 12 seed. And based on the committees rankings, their opponent would have been the highest ranked Group of Five Champion which was projected to be Memphis.

Memphis would have to be perfect the rest of the season to hold onto the No. 12 seed, but unfortunately the Tigers lost to Tulane Friday night 38-32. This loss will send Memphis down the CFP’s rankings, meaning Georgia will have a new first round opponent they’ll be projected to play.

It’s impossible to know for sure who their new opponent would be since no Group of Five team made the top 25 rankings this past week, but a playoff projector believes USF is the most likely team who will take the No. 12 seed from Memphis.

South Florida would be a dangerous team for Georgia to play since they went into Florida and beat the Gators on the road this season. USF however does have two losses this season with one coming against Memphis, so that could significantly impact their chances to actually be given the No. 12 seed.

Georgia will find out on Tuesday what their new path in the College Football Playoff will be. Saturday’s games will have a huge impact on what the bracket will look, so there is a chance UGA won’t be the No. 5 seed anymore. But if they are still the No. 5 seed then they will have a new opponent they’ll be projected to play because of Memphis’s loss.
