Georgia is flying high after their 41-13 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday. So far they look like one of the best teams in the country, but so too does Florida.
Florida entered the AP Poll’s top 25 last week which they immediately backed up by blowing out No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28. The Gators are 4-0 now just like Georgia and might jump all the way into the top 10 this week which creates the potential for a massive showdown between Georgia and Florida when they eventually meet on October 31.
Florida may end up being Georgia’s most difficult game this season
Entering this season Georgia probably thought Florida wouldn’t be much of a challenge. The Gators have a new head coach after failing to make a bowl game two of the last three years, so it was easy to see why they didn’t look like a threat. Now Florida is the definition of a threat to Georgia.
Ole Miss just beat LSU last week which sent them all the way up to No. 4 in the AP Poll. Florida however didn’t seem to care about that because they dominated Ole Miss who looked like one of the best teams in the country before Saturday.
Now instead of just being another game on Georgia’s schedule Florida could be one of the most difficult teams they’ll play this season. Georgia’s road games at Alabama and Ole Miss still loom large, but after this weekend Florida could ultimately be the most challenging game of the season.
Georgia vs Florida would be much better on campus this season
Georgia and Florida will play in Atlanta later this season on October 31. Typically they play in Jacksonville but they had to find a new home for their rivalry for the next two years while Jacksonville’s stadium is renovated. In 2027 Georgia and Florida will play in Tampa but this year will be in Georgia’s backyard in Atlanta.
Some fans of both teams view this as a missed opportunity though because these next two matchups could’ve been played on their campuses instead which hasn’t happened since 1995. Imagine though if they chose to do that this year with how great both teams look right now. Sure the atmosphere in Atlanta will still be good, but it would’ve been much better on one of their campuses this year.
Hopefully Georgia and Florida learn from this so the next time they can’t play in Jacksonville for whatever reason they take their game to one of their campuses. They can always go back to Jacksonville after a two year break, so letting these two bitter rivals play in their own stadiums seems like a no brainer especially if both program are going to be this good.
This year may feel like a bit of a missed opportunity, but that doesn’t take away from how big this game could be. As of now this matchup will have massive implications on the race to win the SEC and the College Football Playoff, and for Georgia that wasn’t really expected heading into this season.
