Georgia football just took down Alabama in the SEC Championship game to cement themselves as a serious threat to win the National Championship. While there are a few other teams who have a great chance at winning it all as well, Georgia should be one of the favorites to win a national title this season.
Vegas oddsmakers updated their National Champion odds after all of the conference championship games, and Georgia was given the third best odds. While that does make them one of the favorites, their odds still don't make a lot of sense.
Vegas oddsmakers release curious National Champion odds for Georgia
FanDuel Sportsbook currently gives Georgia +550 odds to win the National Championship. This is the third highest odds to win the national title behind Ohio State at +250 and Indiana at +270.
For starters, giving Ohio State better odds than Indiana immediately after the Hoosiers just beat the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship game doesn't make much sense. On top of that, the Buckeyes probably don't even deserve better odds than Georgia.
Georgia just wrapped up a 12-1 season by beating Alabama in the SEC Championship game by 21 points. The Bulldogs also have key wins over Texas, Ole Miss and Tennessee this season as well. Ohio State on the other hand only has one good win against Texas which came by a much closer margin than Georgia's win over the Longhorns.
Georgia's path in the College Football Playoff is also much easier than Ohio State's as the Bulldogs potential first round opponents (Tulane and Ole Miss) are a more favorable matchup than Ohio State's potential opponents (Texas A&M and Miami).
At the end of the day it isn't that big of a deal if Ohio State and Indiana have better odds, but to give them significantly better odds makes very little sense. Georgia however will have their chance to prove Vegas wrong as they might have the chance to play Ohio State and Indiana en route to a National Championship.
