Georgia football is still in the running to repeat as SEC Champions, but they needed a lot of help entering week 10 of the college football season. There are still two teams above Georgia in the SEC standings, and there are a couple teams tied with UGA as well. So if Georgia was going to get a chance to play for an SEC title, they needed some help from a few other teams.
And the Texas Longhorns gave Georgia that help by beating Vanderbilt on Saturday 34-31.
Texas gives Georgia a big boost in the SEC standings
Alabama and Texas A&M are the two teams above Georgia in the SEC standings, and since they were both on a bye this week UGA couldn't catch up to either. But there are three other teams tied with Georgia with one loss, and it would really help UGA if they all added a second loss.
Two of those teams tied with Georgia were Vanderbilt and Texas. Since the Commodores and Longhorns played each other on Saturday Georgia would get some help regardless of the result, but Texas winning was the better outcome.
Georgia will get to play Texas later this season while they don't get a chance to play Vanderbilt, so UGA can move above Texas if they beat them later this year. Georgia however needed some help to pass the Commodores, and thankfully Texas gave them just that on Saturday.
Georgia now sits in a tie with Ole Miss and Texas with one loss in the SEC. Georgia holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rebels and will have a chance to hand Texas their second SEC loss in two weeks, so now all UGA needs to do is catch up to Alabama or Texas A&M. The Crimson Tide unfortunately have the tiebreaker over Georgia, so UGA's best bet to make it to the SEC Championship game is having the Aggies lose an upcoming game.
Texas A&M faces a couple difficult teams to finish their season, so there is a great chance Georgia will make the SEC Championship game as long as they keep winning.
