Georgia football earned yet another big win on Saturday as they took Mississippi State down 41-21. This win brought Georgia’s SEC record to 6-1 this season with one game left in conference play.
Normally a 6-1 record is good enough for Georgia to have complete control of their destiny in the SEC. That however is not the case this season as Georgia’s chances just to make the SEC Championship game are quickly dwindling.
Georgia’s SEC Championship hopes are fading
While Georgia still sits towards the top of the SEC standings with a 6-1 record, they unfortunately don’t have a great chance at making the SEC Championship game this year. That’s because both Alabama and Texas A&M are still undefeated in conference play, and it isn’t looking like they are going to lose anytime soon.
In order for Georgia to make the SEC Championship game they need to move ahead of the Crimson Tide or Aggies in the standings. Since Alabama holds the head to head tiebreaker over Georgia they need the Tide to lose twice to finish above them in the standings. That means Alabama would need to lose their final two SEC games against Oklahoma and Auburn, and that is unlikely to happen.
Georgia does however have a better chance at passing Texas A&M in the standings because they only need the Aggies to lose once to have a chance to pass them. The Aggies final two SEC games are against South Carolina and Texas and there is definitely a chance they could lose to the Longhorns. But A&M just destroyed a good Missouri team on the road on Saturday, so it seems more likely that they’ll beat Texas instead of lose to them.
All Georgia can do is control what they can control, so that means they need to go out and beat Texas this weekend. While it still seems like a long shot for Georgia to make the SEC Championship game they still have a little hope, but that hope goes away if they lose to Texas. So this matchup on Saturday with the Longhorns arguably is the biggest game of the season as their hopes to repeat as SEC Champions is on the line.
