Georgia football welcomed the start of the 2025 season on Thursday by hosting their first practice of fall camp. However, transfer running back Josh McCray was reportedly nowhere to be found during the 20-minute portion of Thursday's practice when the media were invited to watch the team.
Transfer RB Josh McCray did not practice for Georgia on Thursday
There are a lot of big name transfers that made the decision to transfer to Georgia this offseason. One of the biggest additions to UGA's roster is McCray, who transferred to UGA from Illinois.
McCray spent four seasons at Illinois where he was one of their more reliable running backs. His career began with a bang in 2021 when he recorded 112 carries, 549 yards and two touchdowns. McCray unfortunately dealt with a few injuries during the 2022 and 2023 seasons that limited his availability, but this past season was his best by far.
During the 2024 season, McCray recorded 117 carries for 609 yards. However, he was able to rack up an impressive 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Georgia is in desperate need for a second running back to play the backup role behind Nate Frazier, and McCray is the player most likely to fill that role. The fact that he wasn't present during practice on Thursday however makes it unclear if he will be able to accomplish that or not.
Kirby Smart did not give an injury update on Thursday and no media members asked about McCray's availability, so no one knows where McCray was. The hope now is that the next time Georgia takes the practice field that McCray will be out there with the rest of the team.
And hopefully he will be able to immediately show why he should be the second running back on the depth chart behind Frazier.
