During the beginning of February, a new bill was introduced to the Georgia state Senate that would give Georgia football an advantage. This bill would change the way NIL was handled at Georgia as NIL earnings would no longer be able to be taxed as income.
This obviously would be great news for every athlete at Georgia because everyone would automatically make more money without Georgia having to actually pay them more. The bill was viewed as such a great idea that a member of the Alabama state Senate introduced a similar bill just days after it was introduced in Georgia.
Everyone knows how slowly things move in government, so there really wasn't an expectation surrounding how fast this bill could become a law, but everyone had high hopes that it would eventually become law. That dream however came to a crashing end on Friday as the bill is reportedly dead and no longer being discussed.
The Georgia state Senate bill that would have exempted NIL compensation from state income tax is dead. It will need to be attached to a House bill if it's enacted. https://t.co/5X0k6Ubnzp

What does this mean for Georgia?
While this news is very unfortunate for Georgia, it really doesn't chanage anything for them. It's not like something is being stripped or taken away from them, they will now just have to continue operating as they always have been.
However, the fear now is that Alabama will pass this bill which would give the Tide a small advantage over Georgia. Alabama would then join programs like Texas, Florida and Tennessee where this rule is already put in place.
Georgia clearly has a lot of their main competition in these states, so it is unfortunate this bill will not become a law. But Kirby Smart and Georgia have signed a top two recruiting class in the country each of the last three years, so the expectation should be for Georgia to continue to recruit at a high level even without this bill passing.
