Georgia just lost to Auburn for the first time since 2017. Losing to Auburn is never good, but losing to an average Auburn team as the No. 1 team in the country at home is about as bad as it gets.

Georgia was sitting pretty both in the race to win the SEC and make the College Football Playoff, but losing this game, a game they never should've lost, puts all of their goals in jeopardy. Now they have little room for error as they hope to bounce back and win the SEC and make a run at a national championship.

Georgia may have thought this would be an easy win

Georgia was on top of the world after beating Alabama last week and becoming the No. 1 team in the country. Georgia also jumped out to a 14-0 lead against Auburn and looked like they were going to cruise to an easy win.

These two factors may have gotten to their heads because after taking a two touchdown lead Auburn dominated for most of the game. Georgia may have thought they were going to win with ease and move to 7-0 heading into their bye week and that may have caused them to take their foot off the gas.

That is something that no team can ever afford to do in the SEC because as everyone just witnessed even a below average team like Auburn can go on the road and beat the No. 1 team in the country.

Gunner Stockton did Georgia no favors

Gunner Stockton's game got off to an unusual start because the refs made him leave the game to be evaluated for a concussion during the Bulldogs' opening drive. He came back in the game three plays later, but he never looked like the same player from that moment on.

Stockton had some good moments throughout this game, but they were overshadowed by his three turnovers. His two interceptions were some of the worst throws he's had all season, but his fumble at the end of the game is what everyone will be talking about.

Georgia needed one more first down to get in field goal range with about a minute to play. On first down Stockton got the call for a quarterback draw and he ran into center Drew Bobo and fumbled the ball which Auburn recovered. This put Auburn in elite field position which they took advantage of as they marched down the field to kick a game-winning field goal as time expired.

A lot of people deserve blame for this loss, but Stockton will righfully be given some of the most blame for this defeat.

What's next for Georgia?

Georgia now heads into their bye week which they desperately need. This gives them a chance to not only get healthy but to figure out a way to recover from this loss and try to save their season.

After their bye week Georgia heads to Atlanta to play a Florida team who has beat Ole Miss and Texas this season. The Gators have also looked like a disaster at times this season too, so who knows which Florida team will show up for that game. After that Georgia heads to Ole Miss before hosting a solid Missouri team. If Georgia can survive this stretch they get an easy finish to the year with games against South Carolina and Georgia Tech.

Georgia still has all of their goals in front of them. As long as they win their final four SEC games they will more than likely make it to the SEC Championship game, and they can also still afford another loss and still make the College Football Playoff too. This performance though makes it far more difficult for them to accomplish their goals then it needed to be, but they only have themselves to blame.
