Oklahoma's season is all but over after their humiliating loss to Georgia on Saturday. The Bulldogs handed Oklahoma their second defeat of the season, but that is an afterthought for Sooners fans right now because this loss took away all hope they have for their program for the rest of this season and into the future.
Oklahoma fans saw their hopes of a successful season vanish before their eyes in Athens, but the lasting effects from this loss are far worse than that. Look no further than Dakota Gregory from Stormin In Norman who showed just how little hope they have for the future after their loss to Georgia.
"The Sooners head into their bye week at 2-2 after a humiliating 41-13 loss to No. 2 Georgia on Saturday in Athens," Gregory wrote for stormininnorman.com. "The Bulldogs are serious national title contenders, so a road loss to them wouldn't ever be detrimental, but OU is supposed to be at that level too. Those grueling 60 minutes further proved, though, that Venables' program is a long way from contending for anything."
Oklahoma fans are ready for big changes after blowout loss to Georgia
Oklahoma is a program rich with history. They are one of college football's undisputed Blue Bloods, and when they joined the SEC they expected that success to follow them. Through three seasons though they haven't quite accomplished what they were hoping, and this loss to Georgia appears to be the final straw.
Oklahoma fans are begging for quarterback John Mateer to be benched. They also are hoping to see offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle get fired now that they are in their bye week. Sooners fans felt this way long before the Georgia game, but their tough day in Athens is what pushed them over the edge.
"The defense might be stellar, but the offense has been dormant for three seasons now, including the last two with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer, plus all three behind an abysmal offensive line that's coached by Bill Bedenbaugh. The last three games have shown the Sooners are destined for a failed season with the toughest schedule in the country and no ability to score unless something changes," Gregory wrote.
Life for Oklahoma won't be getting any easier. After their bye week they get to face No. 1 Texas who would effectively end their season with a win. Then they get Kentucky and Mississippi State next who are both ranked with future matchups against Florida, Ole Miss and Missouri looming. The Sooners may not make it to a bowl game this year, and if that happens they would point to the Georgia game as the beginning of their downfall.
Oklahoma expects to be a program that looks like Georgia does right now. They believe they should be competing for SEC championships and national titles every season just like Georgia, but Saturday's 41-13 loss showed them just how far they are from being a serious contender.
All it takes is one win over Texas in two weeks for the Sooners to be back, but if the Georgia game showed anything it's that Oklahoma fans have every right to have no hope right now.
