For the first time in their historic rivalry's history Georgia and Florida will play in Atlanta this weekend. These two teams typically play in Jacksonville, but due to stadium renovations that are taking place this rivalry had to be moved to a new location for the next two years.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is used to hosting big games as they host the SEC Championship game and Peach Bowl every season, but this is the first time they are hosting Georgia's matchup with Florida. The game is expected to be just as good as when it's in Jacksonville, in fact it could be even better based on the the fact that they are offering standing room only tickets a few days out from game day.

Atlanta should host Georgia vs Florida more often

Atlanta is making a strong case for why they should host Georgia's game with Florida more often. It's clear that the stadium and city is good enough to host a game like this, and it's also obvious that the fan bases don't mind playing here either since the game is sold out and the stadium is offering standing room only tickets.

Atlanta however should host this game more often because it levels the playing field a bit. Florida is far closer to Jacksonville where these teams typically play. In fact, they are over four times as close to Jacksonville than Georgia is. Sure it is still a neutral site game for both teams when they play in Jacksonville, but Florida has the advantage since they have far less traveling to do.

That advantage flips this year though because Georgia is four times as close to Atlanta as Florida is. So to make things fair it feels like this rivalry should either rotate between Jacksonville and Atlanta or just start playing on their two campuses instead.

Hype for Georgia vs Florida hasn’t been this high in a long time

This matchup feels a bit different this year. There is always a lot of hype going into this game every season, but this year it feels like there is even more hype surrounding the game than normal.

The reason for this added hype is probably due to the fact that Florida actually has a good team this year. Over the past few years they have always been bad and that takes some excitement away from this game, but they are ranked inside the top 20 and have a realistic chance at beating Georgia for the first time in a long time.

Florida also still has a chance to make the playoff this season too. This would be their program's first appearance in the playoff, but if they lose to Georgia they likely would not have a chance to make it anymore. So the 12-team playoff adds another element of excitement because it gives more average programs like Florida a chance to actually make it.

It's unfortunately unlikely that this game will ever return to Atlanta anytime soon, but the city is making a strong push for why Georgia and Florida should consider it.
