Georgia has arguably their biggest home game of the season already approaching as they will take on Oklahoma in Athens on Sept. 26. Every big home game Georgia fans are hoping to see the SEC give them a night game, but those wishes were not granted as kickoff between Georgia and Oklahoma is set for 3:30 pm EST.
To make matters worse, South Carolina is the team that took the night slot from them.
The SEC opted to go with South Carolina at Alabama and Texas A&M at LSU in the two night slots on ABC and ESPN in Week 4. Georgia's matchup with Oklahoma will air on ABC or ESPN, so they could've given them one of these time slots instead. Texas A&M and LSU is worthy of a night game since they are both highly ranked, but South Carolina and Alabama have no business getting the nod for a night game over Georgia and the Sooners.
Georgia and Oklahoma deserved a better game time for their Week 4 showdown
LSU and Texas A&M are both top 10 teams in the country entering Week 3. That is more than deserving of a night game, but Georgia and Oklahoma is a battle between ranked teams too. Sure Oklahoma just lost to Michigan, but the Sooners are still ranked and should still be going into next week considering they play New Mexico this week.
Alabama is a top 10 team as well, and their pedigree deserves some night games each year. South Carolina however isn't ranked and won't stand much of a chance at beating Alabama on the road, so Georgia should've gotten the night game over them.
Looking at the rest of Georgia's schedule there aren't too many opportunities for a true night game at home after Oklahoma. The only other ranked team they'll face at home as of now is Missouri, but that matchup doesn't stand out nearly as much as Oklahoma. Auburn, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech are the other three home games for Georgia this year, and as of now none of them are ranked so it's unlikely that Georgia will get a night game against them either.
It's a shame that the SEC picked a significantly less exciting game over Georgia and Oklahoma to be at night, but a 3:30 start time isn't terrible. A Noon kick would've been disastrous, so fans can be happy they avoided that.
Georgia holds slim all-time advantage over Oklahoma
Georgia and Oklahoma have only played one time in their storied histories. That game came at the 2018 Rose Bowl which was one of the College Football Playoff semifinal matchups that year. Georgia won it 54-48 in what was one of the best games in recent history.
Georgia and Oklahoma are slotted to play every other year going forward, so these two programs will finally start to play regularly and develop a history. They are two of the best programs in college football history, so the more they can play each other the better.
That's why it's a shame that they won't play at night because this is a game fans from around the country would love to watch. They likely will still draw a good TV audience for their 3:30 game, but the SEC dropped the ball by allowing Alabama to more than likely destroy South Carolina at home in a night slot instead.
