Glenn Schumann's contract with Georgia is bad and is only getting worse by the season

Glenn Schumann is getting paid a whole lot of money to do a whole lot of nothing for Georgia.

The dollars and cents have to start making sense at some point in Georgia. The details of Glenn Schumman's contract have been revealed, thanks to an open records request from Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald. Weiszer reported Schumann and five other assistants coaches received contract extensions this past offseason, including Stacy Searels and Tray Scott, among the others.

While the notion of James Coley, Travaris Robinson and Donte Williams all getting new deals is fine, the other three have been more under fire this season, especially when it comes to Schumann. The good news, if any, is that Mike Bobo's name does not appear anywhere when it comes to inking a new contract with Georgia. The details of Schumann's contract are rough and are only going to get worse.

Weiszer reported Schumann is making $2.003 million to be Georgia's defensive coordinator in his 10th overall season with the program. He is under contract through June 30, 2028. He will receive a $100,000 pay escalator on July 1, 2026 and again on July 1, 2027. Schumann will be making $2.103 million for the 2026 season if he is retained and would be making $2.203 million for the 2027 season.

The fact Georgia's defense has gotten worse with every additional dollar Schumann makes is awful.

Glenn Schumann is being paid for the position he has, not his production

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how dynasties die. Whenever you pay good people great money, this is what is bound to happen. When it comes to Schumann, is he even good at his job? Although making a tick over $2 million annually should not be that big of a deal for a college football powerhouse like Georgia, it just goes to show that these wrong sort of things are starting to be rewarded under Smart.

Look. Top-flight coordinators like Dan Lanning and Todd Monken only come around every so often. You should be grateful for as long as you have them. However, so many other promising branches off Smart's coaching tree have blossomed. Some have dried up, but at least they have the gumption to see what they could do outside of Smart's control. Schumann is more of an idea than a coordinator...

Ultimately, he will be left with no choice but to earn his paycheck. Admittedly, the last two weeks have been more good than bad for him on the Georgia sidelines. The bad news is nobody seems to really trust this defense at all. Playing great defense should be this team's bread and butter. While Gunner Stockton and the offense have played up to their standard, the same cannot be said for the defense.

Georgia giving Schumann $2 million annually is not enough to stop paying taxes just yet, but close...
