Gunner Stockton is fresh off the best performance of his career in Georgia’s 43-35 victory over Ole Miss. Stockton was nearly perfect all night as he completed 26 of 31 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 59 rushing yards and another touchdown.

This performance has put Stockton in the thick of the Heisman Trophy race, which no one saw coming at the start of the season. While that is a big takeaway to have coming out of Georgia’s victory over the weekend, the thing that no one is talking about enough is how he accomplished something no quarterback has done since 2004.

Gunner Stockton’s latest accomplishment is one for the history books

According to SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic, no quarterback has gone a perfect 12-for-12 or better in a half against an AP top five opponent since 2004. That is until Stockton pulled off that feat against Ole Miss on Saturday.

Georgia needed Stockton to be perfect in the second half against Ole Miss because UGA’s defense couldn’t get a stop to save their lives. The Rebels scored five touchdowns in their first five possessions of the game, so Stockton had no choice but to be perfect just to keep up. But then Georgia’s defense finally woke up and got a few big stops in the fourth quarter, and that is when Georgia took the lead and never gave it back.

Stockton and Georgia now enter their second bye week of the season with everything to play for. An SEC Championship and College Football Playoff appearance are very much at play still, and Stockton has a chance to make a serious run at the Heisman Trophy as well.

It may feel unrealistic to expect a perfect performance from Stockton again, but if he can continue playing at a level even close to what Georgia fans saw on Saturday then the Bulldogs will have a great chance at accomplishing all of their goals.
