Gunner Stockton is still being overlooked nationally, and that's probably fine with him

Georgia's quarterback Gunner Stockton continues to prove he belongs in the conversation among college football's best, even if the national spotlight hasn't quite found him yet.

There is a certain irony in being the starting quarterback at Georgia -- one of college football's most recognizable programs -- and still somehow managing to fly beneath the national radar. Being overlooked seems to have become the preferred narrative for Stockton in his second year as a starter.

That's exactly where Stockton seems to find himself. And if his demeanor, attitude, and approach to the game tell us anything, he's perfectly content to stay there.

While college football's national conversation seems to focus on quarterbacks with inflated passing numbers, flashy personalities, and a huge helping of Heisman hype, Stockton continues to do what he's always done. He shows up, goes to work, and helps Georgia win football games.

A lot of them.

His style is not particularly glamorous. It doesn't always produce highlight-reel moments that dominate social media. And it certainly doesn't satisfy those who believe a quarterback's value should be measured by how frequently his name appears on television.

But it works for Georgia, and more importantly, for Stockton. That's what matters.

Georgia doesn't need Gunner Stockton to win a popularity contest

Perhaps the most interesting part of Stockton's national reputation is how little it seems to reflect what Georgia actually asks him to do.

Kirby Smart isn't interested in building a team around a quarterback's Heisman campaign. He's interested in winning games and, eventually, winning championships, and that means having someone behind center who understands the system, protects the football, and makes the plays necessary to win.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo isn't interested in scheming an offense around a quarterback who wants to break passing records and set SportsCenter anchors on fire as they watch tape. He wants someone who plays within himself, but can still lift the team and carry them when needed.

Stockton has embraced that responsibility rather than trying to transform himself into something he's not.

That doesn't mean he's not capable of making spectacular plays. He showed that last week against Alabama, going 9 of 10 on third down with some incredibly clutch throws. He showed it last season against Tennessee, dropping dimes when his team needed it the most.

But there's a difference between making spectacular plays when they're needed and constantly trying to manufacture them, and Gunner Stockton understands that.

And while some quarterbacks might resent playing in an offense that doesn't always showcase their individual talents, Stockton appears perfectly comfortable letting Georgia's success speak for him.

The national spotlight doesn't always reward substance in a QB

College football has become increasingly obsessed with quarterback celebrity.

Preseason rankings, Heisman odds, transfer portal valuations, and social media attention help determine which players become household names long before they've accomplished anything meaningful on the field.

Arch Manning had all that and more, and the ride with Texas has been anything but smooth for the legacy quarterback.

Stockton doesn't necessarily fit that mold.

He isn't the quarterback generating headlines with edgy comments or showing off a larger-than-life public persona on social media.  His appeal comes from something less marketable but more valuable: consistency, toughness, and an unquestionable commitment to his teammates.

None of those qualities guarantee a championship, of course, but they provide the foundation for the kind of leadership championship teams need. Kirby Smart's program thrives on leadership, and that's one of Gunner's biggest assets.

Eventually, the wins become impossible to ignore

The beauty of Stockton's situation is that he doesn't have to convince anyone of his worth through interviews, social media, or elaborate PR campaigns. He has an opportunity to make his case every Saturday.

As Georgia continues to face the rigors of an SEC schedule in pursuit of another College Football Playoff appearance, the importance of Stockton's leadership will only grow.

There will undoubtedly be games when the Bulldogs need him to do more than manage the offense or hand the ball off to his talented and deep stable of running backs. There will be moments when his arm, legs, and decision-making determine whether Georgia survives or suffers a costly defeat.

Those are the opportunities that can change the narrative and enhance a quarterback's national reputation. Don't expect Stockton to spend much time worrying about when that recognition might arrive, because those aren't his priorities. He's more concerned with winning.

And if Georgia keeps winning while the rest of college football keeps overlooking its quarterback, something tells me Gunner Stockton won't lose a minute of sleep over it.
