Gunner Stockton is still way too low in latest On3 Heisman Trophy poll

Gunner Stockton is more of a Heisman candidate than many prospective finalists ahead of him.

This is getting ridiculous. What we are watching out of Gunner Stockton operating the Georgia Bulldogs offense to perfection in the red zone just about every time is akin to what Cam Newton did for the 2010 Auburn Tigers during his Heisman Trophy and national championship-winning campaign. It is not to say Stockton should win the Heisman this year, but why is he being so grossly overlooked?

Stockton has been in and around the Heisman conversation for the better part of the season. He is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. On the season, he has led Georgia to a 10-1 record and a top-four ranking with signature wins over Tennessee, Ole Miss and Texas. Have any of the other Heisman hopefuls done that? Stockton is putting up numbers, but he may not get an invite.

After looking at On3's Heisman Poll for Week 14, how are their six players slotted ahead of Stockton?

  1. Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza
  2. Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia
  3. Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back Jeremiyah Love
  4. Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin
  5. Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed
  6. Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson
  7. Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton
  8. Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore
  9. Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith
  10. Texas Tech Red Raiders linebacker David Bailey

Outside of Fernando Mendoza and arguably Jeremiyah Love, Stockton has a case to be in at No. 3...

Let's now unpack why it is crazy to have four other quarterbacks ranked ahead of him in this poll.

Gunner Stockton has played well enough to be a Heisman Trophy finalist

On the year, Stockton has competed 71.4 percent of his passes for 2,465 yards and 19 touchdowns to only four interceptions. As a runner, he has 88 carries for 361 yards and eight additional rushing touchdowns. Clearly, everyone who votes for the Heisman wants to give it to a Big Ten player who has faced mostly cupcakes, or a quarterback who did not lose at home to Alabama by only three points...

The Heisman should be an award that perfectly marries stats and narrative. Stockton checks the box with both. At the start of the year, this was not one of the better Georgia teams we have seen play for Kirby Smart. Heading into Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate, this might be the most cohesive team he has ever coached. Smart should get coach of the year honors, but the narrative is not as heartwarming.

When it comes to Diego Pavia being ahead of Stockton, how about Vanderbilt making the College Football Playoff first? If the Commodores do that, then he certainly deserves an invite. As for Julian Sayin and Marcel Reed, neither the Ohio State Buckeyes or the Texas A&M Aggies have played a schedule comparable to Georgia's. As for Ty Simpson, Alabama beat Georgia, but has two losses..

In the end, Stockton's chances of getting to New York probably went away after not throwing for a touchdown during cupcake week vs. Charlotte. Stockton may have thrown a bad pick, but he was more concerned with getting the ground game going and making sure Georgia did not leave any breadcrumbs behind for what they are going to do vs. Georgia Tech. Stockton is a total team guy.

At this time, Stockton will need to beat Georgia Tech and win the SEC to be a Heisman Trophy finalist.
