There are a lot of unknowns about Georgia football quarterback Gunner Stockton as he is entering the 2025 season as a first time starter. Most of these questions stem from his pretty average play against Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff, but considering that was his first career start it shouldn’t be held against him.
Regardless, Stockton has a lot of doubters entering the 2025 season, but that hasn’t stopped Georgia fans from comparing him to former Georgia quarterback legend Stetson Bennett.
This comparison may surprise some fans at first because Bennett won two National Championships at Georgia, so how can Stockton be compared to him already? But when looking at their style of play, it’s hard to ignore the similarities.
And even Stockton himself was recently quoted saying that he also sees the comparisons to Bennett when it comes to their style of play.
"The way he played, the way he styled some of the things he did, the way he carried himself. Mobility, he's quick, he can get out of the pocket and he has good pocket movement. Had a lot of swagger with what he did. I see the same things in myself."

Gunner Stockton sees himself in Stetson Bennett
No one will deny that Stockton has a lot he needs to accomplish before he matches what Bennett did at Georgia, but it's important to note that Stockton isn't comparing himself to Bennett in that fashion. He is only comparing him and Bennett based on their styles of play, which there is a lot of truth to.
Both players are quick enough to use their legs as weapons while also playing with a lot of confidence and swagger that can rally their teammates behind them. And it was this style of play that Carson Beck got away from this past season that led to some of Georgia's struggles on offense.
Time will tell if Stockton can live up to Bennett's greatness or not, but the tools are there for him to find a lot of success during his time as Georgia's starting quarterback.
