Gunner Stockton may force Kirby Smart to go a different direction

Gunner Stockton needs to be willing to take more chances or Georgia may have to call on his backup.

Georgia football struggled on Saturday night as they were only able to beat Austin Peay 28-6. There are countless reasons why UGA struggled on Saturday, but a lot of those issues came on the offensive side of the ball.

And when an offense is struggling, a lot of the blame will naturally fall on the quarterback, and Gunner Stockton deserves his fair share of it.

Stockton finished the game completing 26 of 34 passes for 227 yards. He failed to make much of an impact with his legs this week and also did not record a touchdown through the air or on the ground, but overall he didn't play horrible. Regardless, this stat line may not look so bad, but he left a lot to be desired.

There were a few opportunities when Stockton could have unleashed a deep ball with a receiver open down the field, but unfortunately he didn't see them and went elsewhere with the ball. Stockton's backup however has shown that he isn't afraid to throw the deep ball, and if Stockton doesn't improve over the next few games Kirby Smart may have no choice but to turn to Ryan Puglisi.

Should Kirby Smart pivot to Ryan Puglisi?

It's worth mentioning that Smart is always extremely hesitant when it comes to changing quarterbacks midseaon. More often than not he likes to ride it out with one guy and see where he can lead Georgia throughout the season.

But at some point Smart may not have much of a choice.

Stockton is not even close to getting benched for Puglisi just yet, but it is something to monitor throughout the next few weeks. However, if things go sideways next week in Knoxville when Georgia takes on Tennessee, don't be surprised if Puglisi is given a chance to breathe some life into UGA's offense.
