Gunner Stockton and Georgia were off this week, but Stockton still found a way to see his Heisman Trophy odds improve.
After his five touchdown performance against Ole Miss last weekend, he catapulted himself into the Heisman conversation. But he still needed a lot of help if he was going to win the award since a few players still had much better odds than him.
But one of those players, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, helped Stockton out but having a poor performance on Saturday. And for that reason alone, Stockton owes Simpson a big “thank you.”
Gunner Stockton now has a better chance to win the Heisman Trophy
Alabama and Simpson took on a South Carolina team that already had four losses this season. The Crimson Tide were expected to win this game by a large margin behind a big performance from Simpson, but the exact opposite happened.
Alabama still won the game 29-22, but for most of the night it looked like they were going to lose. And a big reason for that was because of the play from Simpson who only completed 24 of 43 passes for 253 yards.
Simpson still has a better chance to win the Heisman than Stockton does, mainly because of his head to head win earlier this season. But the gap between the two is a lot less than it was heading into this weekend.
Stockton still has five more games to show why he deserves to win the Heisman. And if he’s lucky he’ll get a sixth opportunity in the SEC Championship game against Simpson and Alabama. But at the end of the day Stockton just needs to stay focused on the most important thing, winning. That has worked out pretty well for him and Georgia so far this season, so there’s no reason to think it won’t continue working out going forward.
