Heisman Trophy finish proves that Gunner Stockton was snubbed of another major honor

Gunner Stockton is playing for something more important know, but he was clearly snubbed here.

It is what it is... Had he played better in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate, Gunner Stockton might have actually been a finalist for this year's Heisman Trophy. Instead, he is not joining Jeremiyah Love, Fernando Mendoza, Diego Pavia, or Julian Sayin in New York for the ceremony on Saturday night. Mendoza is the overwhelming favorite to win it, but Pavia technically has an outside chance at it.

However, after looking at those ranked No. 5 through No. 10, something does not add up here at all...

  1. TBD (Jeremiyah Love, Fernando Mendoza, Diego Pavia, or Julian Sayin)
  2. TBD (Jeremiyah Love, Fernando Mendoza, Diego Pavia, or Julian Sayin)
  3. TBD (Jeremiyah Love, Fernando Mendoza, Diego Pavia, or Julian Sayin)
  4. TBD (Jeremiyah Love, Fernando Mendoza, Diego Pavia, or Julian Sayin)
  5. Texas Tech Red Raiders LB Jacob Rodriguez
  6. Ohio State Buckeyes WR Jeremiah Smith
  7. Georgia Bulldogs QB Gunner Stockton
  8. Ole Miss Rebels QB Trinidad Chambliss
  9. Ohio State Buckeyes S Caleb Downs
  10. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets QB Haynes King

Here are the top-10 voter getters for the Heisman Trophy, with the top four being revealed Saturday.

As you can see, Stockton was wrongfully snubbed from being on the All-SEC Second Team this year. It was Pavia's season to take the SEC by storm, so him getting first team is a huge deal, as that should get him into the College Football Hall of Fame one day. As for Stockton, why did Ole Miss' Trinidad Chambliss and Alabama's Ty Simpson beat him out for second team? They finished behind Stockton.

Chambliss got the seventh-most votes for the Heisman, while Simpson did not finish in the top 10...

Gunner Stockton should have gotten way more love from the SEC voters

If we want to look at Stockton's Heisman Trophy resume, he has good, but not great numbers. Voters love them some numbers, alright... While it should be Mendoza winning this year's award, Pavia or Love winning it could be seen as somewhat justifiable. Sayin being invited to the ceremony is taking away from far more deserving players like Stockton, or Texas Tech star linebacker Jacob Rodriguez.

Of the 13 games Stockton started this year, his best performances were against Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Texas, and Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. His three worst were to Alabama at home in defeat, Charlotte, and in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. He was not that bad vs. Alabama the first time. Georgia showed nothing vs. Charlotte. Stockton still defeated Georgia Tech...

In the end, Stockton was never going to win the Heisman Trophy because he not only had to overcome the early-season loss to Alabama, but his style of play does not always necessitate stat padding. Again, Heisman Trophy voters love them some stats. While Mendoza has the perfect combination stats and narrative, it makes no sense Chambliss and Simpson got more SEC shine.

Stockton and Sayin will be among the favorites to win next year's Heisman Trophy out of fall camp.
