Stetson Bennett has been one of the most talked about backup quarterbacks since the 2026 NFL Draft. When the Los Angeles Rams took Ty Simpson in round one it looked like a Bennett trade was inevitable. However, Bennett has since beaten Simpson out for the QB2 spot and has done well enough to maintain it so far.
Though Bennett is the backup now, drafting a quarterback in the first round means you expect them to be the future of the organization, and Bennett is on the last year of his contract. Being on the last year of his contract means he could be an ideal rent-a-QB deal for any team who is short on luck at quarterback while the Rams get a late round draft pick for a guy they were about to lose anyways.
With recent injuries around the league, there are three teams that would be great suitors for a Bennett trade.
1. Washington Commanders
Washington Commanders star quarterback Jayden Daniels went down Sunday with a gruesome dislocated elbow that will likely sideline him for the remainder of the season. However, a dislocated elbow is not something that will take several seasons to recover from.
The Commanders' quarterback room consists of Marcus Mariota and Athan Kaliakmanis, a seventh round pick from Rutgers. Though Mariota has done good things in the NFL, he has done nothing noteworthy since his Atlanta Falcons campaign. Bennett could be traded to Washington and immediately compete for the starting role and potentially win it.
2. Chicago Bears
This trade would mean a Georgia backfield in Chicago with D'Andre Swift as the star running back. Caleb Williams went down with a hamstring injury and is "week to week" and "likely to miss some time" according to head coach Ben Johnson. Bennett would be a reliable emergency quarterback that could start as long as Williams is out.
The quarterback room behind Williams currently consists of Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum, with little separation between the two in terms of talent.
3. New York Giants
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered an MCL sprain against the Rams, and like Williams, is considered to be week to week and could miss some time. The Giants are much more desperate for another quarterback than the other two teams as the only other guy on roster is Jameis Winston.
While it may be unlikely that Bennett would start over Winston, it is a realistic shot they try and go for Bennett to compete for that starting role and add much-needed depth.
Bennett has never been given a chance to be the Rams starter, and with his contract expiring this year and Ty Simpson on their roster for the next four years it is unlikely he ever will. The best thing for him could be a trade this season where he can play a few games and prove himself on the field before he enters free agency this offseason.
The Rams have never been willing to trade Bennett up to this point, but maybe they'll be interested if one of these teams picks up the phone.
