Kirby Smart had a long history of being a very good assistant coach before becoming Georgia's head coach in 2015. This made him a highly sought after and respected candidate for other jobs before taking the UGA job,

One of those jobs Smart almost took just so happened to be Auburn in 2013, and apparently Smart was about as close as he could get to taking that job.

The college football world would look completely different from what it does today had Smart taken the head coaching job at Auburn in 2013. Thankfully he ended up not getting the job, but he was apparently so close to accepting it that his wife was beginning to shop for Auburn colored ties.

According to the above post, Auburn didn't want to wait until after the National Championship game Samrt was coaching in at Alabama to name him their new head coach. So that fact is what caused the Tigers to go a different route.

There have also been rumors in the past that Auburn didn't grant all of Smart's demands (like Georgia eventually did) that would have likely turned them into the elite program that UGA is today.

There is a great chance though that Smart would have ditched Auburn in 2015 and still taken the Georgia job when it opened up. As everyone knows, Smart played for the Bulldogs for four years, so passing up that job would have been very difficult even if he was already coaching somewhere else.

But at the end of the day, Georgia fans can rejoice because Smart never became the Auburn head coach and has stayed loyal to UGA throughout his playing and head coaching career.

And the best part of all is that Smart has a 9-1 record against Auburn during his tenure at Georgia.
