Georgia is one of the schools with the most draft picks at the NFL Draft almost every year. Now that the Transfer Portal exists they are also have former players getting drafted as well.

During the 2026 NFL Draft it was former quarterback Carson Beck who was drafted in the third round. But next year it is Damon Wilson who is being projected to go in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft which shows that Kirby Smart could really use him in Athens still.

Georgia could benefit from having Damon Wilson back in Athens

Wilson began his career at Georgia where he spent two seasons. His second season was in 2024 where he blew up by recording 22 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

Then came the offseason ahead of the 2025 season where he was potentially the most shocking player Georgia lost to the Transfer Portal. He was projected to be a starter and one of Georgia's biggest contributors, but he opted to transfer to Missouri where he recorded nine sacks last season.

Wilson has once again entered the portal and has landed at Miami where he will play his final season of college football. Expectations are sky high for him entering his final season as Pro Football Focus projects him to sneak into the first round and be the 31st pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Since leaving Georgia he has been wrapped up in a lot of drama with UGA. Allegations accusing him of not repaying Georgia NIL money caused a lawsuit to be filed, and that case to this day has not been settled. This drama would undoubtedly make Kirby Smart not want him on his team today, but if he never left Georgia none of this drama would've ever happened.

Georgia is ready to move on, but this first round projection is yet another reminder of how nice it would be if Wilson never left Athens in the first place.
