Kirby Smart discusses an interesting analogy to help motivate his team
Motivation is one of the biggest things that any head coach has to be good at. At a program like Georgia I think it's pretty easy to keep the team motivated, simply because their goals are so high. Every year the expectation is to win a national championship, and in order to do that they can't afford to lose many games. So that right there is enough motivation for the majority of players.
That however isn't the only thing Kirby Smart uses though as motivation for his team.
In a recent press conference Smart was asked about all the upsets in the SEC last week. Specifically about Tennessee and Alabama dropping games nobody expected and if he uses that as an example for his team.
"I think for a little two-minute window, you tell them that, and then they forget about it."
- Kirby Smart
To be honest I thought these two upsets against SEC rivals would be a bigger talking point with the team. Maybe this point is very easy to get across and discussing it for a couple minutes makes that point. Or maybe Smart prefers to focus on his team and what they need to improve on instead of what's going on around the country.
But regardless, I'm glad Smart at least mentioned these upsets to the team because it could very easily happen to Georgia. The last thing anyone wants is for Mississippi State to come to Sanford Stadium this weekend and walk away with a win. That would essentially ruin any hope of having the season we were all dreaming about this offseason.
How does Kirby Smart motivate his team?
I'm sure there are countless ways that Smart and his staff motivate their team, but Smart recently shared an interesting tactic they use.
"If they were doing a Netflix documentary on you this week, who would you want to watch it? Would they approve? Would you send it to your parents? Would you send it to an NFL team if they did a documentary on your performance your pride and how you practiced this week?"
- Kirby Smart
On the surface this seems like a very silly analogy to make, but when thinking about it more I think it's genius. It's easy to slack off when you are by yourself or with your teammates you are comfortable with, but what would you do if others were watching? What would you do if someone you love or an NFL team was watching you? What if a documentary was being made about you?
Sure the guys know that these people aren't always watching, but if they can trick themseleves into acting like they are then I think they would always work as hard as possible.
Regardless of what tactics Smart chooses to use, at the end of the day we all hope they work. With Georgia sitting at 4-1 they can't afford to make many more mistakes, especially one as large as we saw Alabama make last week. So let's hope Georgia's motivation is high enough this week so they can handle their business against a weaker opponent.
