Gunner Stockton is assumed to be the starting quarterback for Georgia football this season. But anything is still possible until Kirby Smart says the job is officially his.
Smart spoke with the media on Monday ahead of their first game of the season against Marshall, and he was asked if they plan on playing multiple quarterbacks during this game. This was an obvious tactic to try and get Smart to confirm if Stockton is their starting QB or not, but in true Smart fashion he didn’t give any information away.
”That would be very presumptuous to say that. I don't do the assumptions. I don't get into the forecasting,” Smart shared via 247Sports.com. “I get into what do we have to do on each play to be successful, and that's basically what we're thinking about right now is how we can be successful offense, defense, special teams in this game."
Smart doesn’t deny possibility of playing 2 QBs
Smart unsurprisingly did not share any details about what Georgia plans to do at the quarterback position against Marshall this weekend. However, it is strange he didn’t deny the possibility of playing multiple quarterbacks against Marshall.
Every year there are a few teams across the country who can’t decide on who their starting quarterback should be by the end of fall camp. So these teams go into their first game knowing they’ll play one guy in the first half and the other in the second half. This is something Georgia could do with Stockton and Ryan Puglisi if neither player has emerged as the starter yet, but Smart has never used this strategy in the past.
Smart however could have shot down this idea of playing both quarterbacks against Marshall without saying who the starter will be, but that isn’t what he said. Instead Smart left a small door open where it is a possibility for both Stockton and Puglisi to play on Saturday, which would immediately turn into the biggest storyline from this game.
