Kirby Smart doubles down on fan engagement comments

Was Kirby Smart justified for saying this?

In case you somehow missed this news, Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart let the fanbase know of his displeasures with the environment they created in Georgia’s 31-13 win over Auburn this past weekend.

As you would imagine this soundbite did not sit well with the Georgia fanbase. Nobody wants to hear from their head coach that they aren’t doing a good enough job in the stands, especially in a rivalry game, but Smart said what he said and it appears he isn’t backtracking now.

Just days after his comments on Saturday, Smart doubled down and once again is not holding back. This time however he did provide some context and clarifications about his motivations for doing so.

"Yeah, you know, I think I said what I said, and I stand on what I said and feel that it could have been better. But, you know, my job is to coach the football team, and I'm going to do the best I can in my power."

That last part really hits home with me because at the end of the day I believe Smart is only trying to do what he thinks is best for his team. Part of what makes college football so great are the amazing atmospheres home teams create, and that has always been a key factor when teams travel to Sanford Stadium. So at the end of the day I believe Smart is only trying to put his team in a better position to win by asking the fans to make it harder on visiting teams.

And if you still think Smart is taking a shot at the fanbase this next quote will show you how he truly feels.

"We're a team. We're a unit, and I think it's okay to say how you feel and try to pull the family together and pull in the right direction, and you guys want to make it about Kirby said this. We're a team. We're a team. Let's do this together."

I’m interested to see how the fanbase reacts this weekend when Mississippi State comes to town. Mississippi State is one of the worst teams in the SEC this season so it would be easy for the fanbase to take a game off and not create a daunting atmosphere. But knowing the Georgia fanbase I think they are going to respond and make it next to impossible for Mississippi State to operate this weekend.
