What is going to happen to the College Football Playoff? Will it stay put at 12 teams? Or will coaches be able to convince their conference leaders to push it to 16 or 24 teams?
If it were up the coaches the vast majority would vote to expand the playoff to 24 teams. They argue that it would be the best thing for the sport, but their true intentions have nothing to do with that. As Kirby Smart recently discussed, these coaches want to expand the playoff for their own personal gain because more playoff teams means more job security.
“Absolutely If you ask enough people, they want an opportunity to be in the party, and if they don't make the party, they get fired,” Smart said via 247Sports.com. “So then they're worried about the party, not the dilution of the market.”
Kirby Smart called out his peers for trying to exploit playoff expansion to their benefit
There is a clear benefit to the CFP expanding. More games means more opportunities to sit back and watch football be played when everything is on the line. That however doesn't seem worth it because it will forever change what has made college football so great.
College football is one of the biggest sports in the world because it was so different from every other sport. Their regular season arguably was the most important out of all other regular seasons because one or two losses would end a teams chances to win a national title.
Georgia's rivalries are at risk of losing their significance
Expanding the playoff eliminates that, but those in favor of expansion believe that is a good thing. They believe changing college football from how it's been played for over a century is the right decision, and it's a lot of head coaches that are leading that charge.
Smart however is't falling for their ploy. He knows they are pushing for expansion because if they can add a playoff appearance to their resume then it's more unlikely that they would be fired.
That should never be someone's motivation to change a sport, but unfortunately Smart thinks that is what is occurring. He however can just sit back and laugh at his peers because he didn't need to change the system to get more job security.
Kirby Smart and Georgia didn't need to play the system to find success
Smart arguably has the most job security in the country. That's what happens after winning two National Championships and four conference titles. The best part about this though is that Smart earned this security the old fashioned way by putting his head down and just being better than everyone else.
He didn't have to beg for the playoff to expand just to create a made-up accomplishment to add to his resume. Smart won at the highest level multiple times and that is why his job is as secure as it can possibly be.
Kirby Smart put the CFP committee on blast
It's a shame what his peers are trying to do to the sport, but it's nice that Smart is calling them out for it. His voice carries a lot of weight in the world of college football, so hopefully people listen so he can talk some sense into his peers who are doing things for the wrong reasons.
