Will Muschamp was the first Georgia coach to leave Athens and take a job elsewhere at the end of the regular season. Muschamp was Georgia’s Defensive Coordinator for a couple years before stepping back into a role off the field, but he finally feels ready again to take on a job on the field.

That however won’t be happening at Georgia as he was named the new Defensive Coordinator at Texas.

Kirby Smart spoke with the media for the first time since this news, and he shared how happy he is for Muschamp which may be a bit surprising to some fans.

"I am so happy for him," Smart said via si.com. "He loves coaching. He loved coaching when he was here. It was hard for him to step away and he felt like he needed to and I have so much respect for him. He helped us replace him with the guys we got. He helped us tremendously in that role. He helped us tremendously throughout the year. And he has been really good to me personally and and great to Georgia and he has been really good to a lot of players that he has recruited. So when he had an opportunity to jump back in, I know he loves it and he missed it dearly.”

Kirby Smart urges Georgia fans to be happy for Will Muschamp

There’s now denying how big of a loss losing Muschamp is for Georgia. It is a huge benefit to have a former head coach and successful coordinator in an analyst role, so losing that experience will be impossible to replace.

Muschamp however does not belong in an analyst role, and since Glenn Schumann is doing well as Georgia’s Defensive Coordinator he didn’t really have much of a choice. It is a bit frustrating for him to go to an SEC rival like Texas, but that clearly is too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Georgia will get their first crack at Muschamp at Texas in 2027, but for now UGA fans should be happy for him since he absolutely deserves to be a Defensive Coordinator at a big name school.
