Kirby Smart, Georgia showing major interest in 5-star WR transfer
Early on Wednesday some shocking news was released surround a former five-star wide receiver from Texas. For reasons unknown, Johntay Cook was reported to no longer be with the Longhorns.
Now while this news didn't have any impact on Georgia football initially, word quickly spread that Kirby Smart and his staff had already made contact with Cook in just a few short hours after this news came out.
Georgia football is after a talented WR in the transfer portal
Cook was in the midst of his sophomore season with the Longhorns before this news dropped on Thursday. He had a solid true freshman season last year that saw him record eight receptions for 136 yards. Fast forward to his sophomore season and Cook was on pace to do much better than his freshman season.
So far this season, Cook's stats are nearly identical with eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. But he did that in just four games this season compared to seven last year. So it's clear that he took a huge step in the right direction this year.
Adam Gorney with Rivals reported on Thursday that Georgia has already made contact with Cook since he left the Longhorns. Unfortunately for Georgia however, Oregon and Ole Miss have also contacted Cook as well.
It remains to be seen what Cook ends up deciding to do. It's unlikely that he will announce a commitment to a new school anytime soon because he wouldn't be able to play this season anyways. But it is significant that Georgia has already made contact with him.
Hopefully this will put the Bulldogs at or near the top of his list, that way Smart and his staff can work their magic this offseason and potentially bring him to Athens for next season.
