Georgia's backup quarterbacks got to play for over half the game against Tennessee State which helped Kirby Smart figure out who their backup should be for the season. There's only one problem, he wasn't willing to talk about who their full time backup could be going forward.
"It's great for them," Kirby Smart said via dawgpost.com. "It's really not so much about the development 'cause they get those same reps every day in practice. I'm glad for them and their families and the work they do and all the work they put in that they got to play and see a little bit of a reward, reward for what they do.”
Kirby Smart's actions showed Ryan Puglisi is Georgia's backup QB
Heading into the season opener Smart said that he was hoping Ryan Puglisi and Ryan Montgomery would both get a chance to play. He was going to use this as an opportunity for them both to compete for the backup job, and since Georgia got off to such a large lead they both did get to play.
Puglisi however played far more than Montgomery. He got to play four series while Montgomery only got to play one. This indirectly shows that Puglisi may be the backup quarterback for the year and Smart for whatever reason just doesn't want to officially put this competition to bed.
Puglisi however still left the door open for Montgomery to compete for the job. Puglisi's first two series did not go well as they ended in zero points and only one first down combined. He responded in the third quarter by leading Georgia on two touchdown drives, but he gave Montgomery an opening to make his move and he took full advantage of it.
Ryan Montgomery may deserve more opportunities to prove himself
It's hard for Montgomery to wow anyone since he only got to play one series. He however played well in the one chance he was given.
He finished his drive extremely fast by going 79 yards in just five plays. He completed the two passes he threw which included a 54-yard bomb to Jeremy Bell for a touchdown.
Whether Montgomery deserves another chance to win the backup job or not is a conversation worth having. There's only one problem, he may not get another opportunity. He realistically could play next week when Georgia plays Western Kentucky, but there is no guarantee that he will see the field. Georgia would have to get out to an early lead once again to give him a chance to play, and Smart already showed that he wants to give a majority of the backup series to Puglisi first if that happens.
Western Kentucky is better than Tennessee State too. Georgia should still win by a large margin, but it's unlikely they'll win by 60 points again and there will probably be less time for the backups to play.
All Montgomery can do is take advantage of any opportunity given to him. The same goes for Puglisi as well. Next week realistically is the last chance for either QB to play this season, so if they want the backup job they better take advantage of an opportunity if it is given to them.
